Dive in for a peek at the incredible and abundant street art of Oaxaca City, Mexico. Pick a favorite and go discover some for yourself!

Bienvenidxs a Oaxaca. “Welcome to Oaxaca.”

Oaxaca is known for its talented artists, indigenous culture, nature, and social justice protests.  These facets are beautifully captured in the abundant murals and prints scattered across the walls of the city.  I was captivated with the color, vibrancy, and power of their messages.

Where to Find It

There is no one neighborhood in which to look for street art – it can surprise you around any corner or inside any doorway. Many of these photos were taken in the western portion of the city, but also along walks in Jalatlaco, Xochimilco, and from the Centro down to the huge market in the southwest, Mercado Central de Abastos. This is just a small sampling of the art that is out there, so don’t worry, there is plenty more to discover! Part of the joy of exploring the city is finding new murals in unexpected places.

If you want a fun and different way to see the murals, you can take a bicycle street art tour from Coyote Aventuras to see some great pieces and get background on their history and that of the city.

Culture and Identity

Much of Oaxaca’s art celebrates Mexican culture, ancestors, and indigenous identity.

“My pride is my origin, the corn.”

mural with stylized traditional god over village
black and white painting of old lady with a skeleton face, large hat, petting dogs
Dia de los Muertos. Iconic images of the Day of the Dead. Oaxaca is famous for its celebration of this Mexican holiday in early November.

Protest

The explosion of Oaxacan street art has its roots in protest – following a 2006 teacher’s strike with a state response that turned deadly, art collectives, notably the Assembly of Revolutionary Artists of Oaxaca (ASARO), used their artistic talents to express their point of view, in public, on the streets.  The tradition continues today with socially and politically-themed screen prints pasted up around the city, seeding alternate views for as long as they are allowed to remain.  (For more background, check out this article.)

“Crime of the state” “Defender of the land”
“And now who can help us?”
graffiti saying "destruyen los pueblos en nombre del Progreso"
This graffiti showed up near a protest going on at the time. It says: “They destroy towns in the name of Progress.” It was removed the next day.

Important People and Events

Famous figures loom large…

mural with faces of three famous men and one woman with mushrooms. Says "Huaxyacac".

…and the Covid 19 pandemic dead are remembered…

mural with stylized pink figures in pain. "muerte collectiva Covid 19"
I found this intense and moving. It (very) roughly translates to “Earthly Payment Collective Death Covid 19.”

Nature

Many murals depict the beauty of nature and connection to the Earth…

mural of earth, girl, and fetal animals with waves. "Greenpeace".

mural of flower and leaf-like hummingbird
animals: turtle, rooster, rabbit, songbird
doorway and surrounding wall painted with stylized traditional god
mural with woman half skeleton says "de la tierra venimos y a la tierra vamos"
“From the Earth We Come and to the Earth We Go”

Community

mural of indigenous girl with big hair and circle of words saying in spanish and in indengenous language "Si el viento nos lleva lejos mis hermanas cuidaran lo que nos heredaron nuestros ancestros".
This is one of my favorites. It roughly translates to: “If the wind takes us far, my sisters will take care of what we inherited from our ancestors.” (Xochimilco neighborhood)

Social Issues

mural of two children with bandana facemasks, corn, a jaguar and other animals. Text reads "en defensa de nuestro cuerpo-territoria".
“In defense of our body-territory”
mural with stylized person saying "hate is not welcome here"

???

Sometimes I don’t have a clue what they’re about but I love them anyway…

mural of man/skeleton with monsters and ghosts coming out of a hole in his stomach and a strange demon-like head wrapped around his legs.
Spirits emerging?…creepy but powerful

For Fun

Mural of flowering tree, hummingbird, calico cat and black cat with a real black cat sitting right next to it.
Life imitates art. Both the live and painted versions of the cat live within a small compound of rental apartments.

Works in Progress

I caught this muralist in action and I’d love to see the finished product someday. Send a photo if you see it!

The street art exhibition is ever-changing. See if you are lucky enough to find a new work in progress by these talented artists.
